If you're a father-to-be and your pregnant partner wants a vbac (vaginal birth after a previous Cesarean delivery) you need help ... in the form of skills
Much of the fear of vbac comes from the lack of birthing skills and birth coaching skills at your last birth. That's not to say that all Cesareans are caused by a lack of skills but most births now-a-days are not a skilled activity so no matter the cause of the Cesarean, a lack of skills causes more fear. You know that in your every day life. When the unexpected occurs you handle the situation better when you know you have skills. Giving birth is no different.
Even when a Cesarean is necessary, skilled families continue to use their skills to work with their baby's efforts to be born but the de-skilling of families has gone on for 40 years so most haven't learned skills nor use them while being prepped or in surgery.
This means when faced with the next birth and a hope for a labor and vaginal delivery, the fear just mounts. This doesn't have to happen. Giving birth is a natural part of Life ... and that means anything! So, it's not so much a 'choice' to have a VBAC that should drive your wife but a determination to become skilled so she can work through the activity of giving birth in as safe a way for herself and your baby as possible.
This also means you need to step up to the plate and learn the skills along side her. Giving birth is an activity and every expectant parent should self-learn skills to do this activity no matter how it unfolds.
Giving birth is a mystery but it shouldn't be mysterious. Learn your Birthing Better skills and you'll become the best Birth Coach on your block and in your family. You can work toward a labor and vaginal birth with confidence and know that if a surgical cesarean becomes necessary you'll both continue to use your skills to assist your baby's passage into your arms.
